Source:Â SAFE For Animals SAFE is calling for MPI to âstep up and shut downâ the Whanganui greyhound racing track after another dog has been killed. On Friday, Big Time Frosty became the 10th dog killed this racing season at the notorious Whanganui greyhound racing track. She sustained a serious fracture of the right tibia after colliding with several other dogs. The track has a reputation amongst greyhound racing circles and is referred to as being a âdeath trapâ if itâs recently been raining. Since the start of the season, 243 dogs have been injured. SAFE spokesperson Will Appelbe said the track needs urgent attention from the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Source:Â SAFE NZ Last month the greyhound trainer Angela Turnwald was fined $3,500 and disqualified for four months after their dog Zipping Sarah tested positive for methamphetamine. Despite the known risks of administering meth to a dog, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will not pursue criminal charges under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. In an email to the Greyhound Protection League, MPI said they donât have enough evidence to do so. SAFE spokesperson Will Appelbe said given there was a positive test for meth, this should be an open and shut case. âRight now, dogs are being drugged in the racing industry,â said Appelbe.
