MIL-OSI New Zealand: Animal Welfare – Another greyhound killed at Whanganui death track

Source: SAFE For Animals SAFE is calling for MPI to “step up and shut down” the Whanganui greyhound racing track after another dog has been killed. On Friday, Big Time Frosty became the 10th dog killed this racing season at the notorious Whanganui greyhound racing track. She sustained a serious fracture of the right tibia after colliding with several other dogs. The track has a reputation amongst greyhound racing circles and is referred to as being a ‘death trap’ if it’s recently been raining. Since the start of the season, 243 dogs have been injured. SAFE spokesperson Will Appelbe said the track needs urgent attention from the Ministry for Primary Industries.

MPI won t chase greyhound trainer whose dog ingested meth and won race

All reported animal welfare offences were taken seriously and, as needed, referred to the agencies best placed to investigate, he said. An email to the Greyhound Protection League that insufficient evidence was available to pursue Turnwald for breaches of the Animal Welfare Act was a mistake, she said, and MPI had apologised. Will Appelbe, spokesman for animal rights group Safe, said he was surprised MPI had decided not to investigate as he regarded the case as “open and shut”. “Why is meth on the dog racing track not treated as seriously as meth on the streets?” he said. MIL-OSI New Zealand: Animal Welfare – SAFE STATEMENT: MPI fails to pursue criminal charges for greyhound meth case

Source: SAFE NZ Last month the greyhound trainer Angela Turnwald was fined $3,500 and disqualified for four months after their dog Zipping Sarah tested positive for methamphetamine. Despite the known risks of administering meth to a dog, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will not pursue criminal charges under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. In an email to the Greyhound Protection League, MPI said they don’t have enough evidence to do so. SAFE spokesperson Will Appelbe said given there was a positive test for meth, this should be an open and shut case. “Right now, dogs are being drugged in the racing industry,” said Appelbe.

The case was bought by the Racing Integrity Unity after the greyhound Zipping Sarah tested positive for methamphetamine. This is the third doping case in the greyhound racing industry in the last six months. SAFE spokesperson Will Appelbe wants the Government to halt all greyhound racing until its recently announced review of the industry is complete. Dogs are being killed, injured and doped, said Appelbe. That’s the state of greyhound
