Making a first starter a best bet can be fraught with danger but she looks a very smart filly and confident she can kick off her career with a win. Trialled here a couple of weeks back and she looked to have gears left when second in the trial.

Melton
Best bet: Race 2, Number 1, Queen Elida
The market will be interesting but $2.20 or thereabouts is acceptable for this girl. This horse had the perfect sit in the qualifier and she was dominant on the line in winning. Chris Alford drives and has drawn the pole. She either leads or adopts an identical path to last start with a box-seat sit. Whatever the scenario, she’s the one to beat.

Best bet: Race 4, Number 13, Aladdin Sane
This horse is a quirky trotter that can do things wrong, but there is no doubting his ability and he can make it three on end. This horse made a mistake two back but was able to recover and prove too good, then was dominant last time. This horse has to do work in order to win here, but he has shown recently that he can work and still be strong at the end.

Any glimpse of his recent Menangle efforts and he’ll be winning this. I was keen on him last time out at Newcastle. More Racing Racing
He drew the second row and ran okay, but was disappointing. Draws the inside this time around and should hold a forward spot. If he leads, then it’s race over.

Wandering out of the Palladium at Crown last night, I ran into a harness official wearing a look of serene satisfaction.
The previous three or four hours had been quite extraordinary. The official was glowing.
