Mesa has a plan to ensure an economical supply of water to serve fast-growing southeast Mesa, but that doesnât mean it will be cheap or easy.
A 10 ½ mile pipeline costing $90 million and snaking through east Mesa and through Gilbert would send a large amount of treated effluent to the Gila River Indian Community to irrigate crops.
In return, Mesa would receive rights toward supplies of potable water suitable for drinking after treatment, averting potential shortfalls an estimated four or five years from now in southeast Mesa.
Despite the daunting cost and the disruption of traffic during the pipelineâs construction along parts of Val Vista Drive and Greenfield Road, Mayor John Giles said the pipeline is not only a necessity, but a good long-term investment in creating much-sought high-paying jobs and sales tax revenues.

But even though the state law is consistently violated, enforcing it is a difficult problem unless cops catch someone setting off aerial fireworks, City Manager Chris Brady said.
âThe only way they can enforce it is when they actually see someone lighting the fireworks,ââ Brady said. âI think people standing around in the street is not enough to enforce it.ââ
Kevin Bush, a deputy Mesa fire chief and fire marshal, said fireworks sales are regulated at supermarkets and fireworks stands to ensure that only legal ones are sold.
âThe biggest issue for all of us is that there really is nothing to control the influx of illegal fireworks coming into our state and our city of Mesa,ââ Bush said.

Mesaâs pandemic relief efforts combined millions in federal dollars, a redeployed army of city employees and a strong network of non-profit organizations to aid thousands of people in different ways.
But the once powerful outreach from Mesa CARES has run out of gas, leaving behind a patchwork of programs to help the needy while a second wave of COVID-19 rages through Arizona.
âItâs kind of a work in progress,ââ Deputy City Manager Natalie Lewis. âWe spent all the dollars. They are no longer available.ââ
She said the funding expired at the end of December and Mesa will not need to return any money to federal officials because âthe entire amount was invested in eligible programs and services.ââÂ
