As the U.S. edges closer to normal and people return to restaurants, movie theaters, parties, summer festivals and fairs, what s likely the most contagious strain of coronavirus to date has been gaining ground nationally, and now accounts for an estimated 51% of infections.
The delta variant, a mutation of coronavirus that originated in India, drove up case rates nationally by 11% in the last week, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it threatens anyone who has yet to be fully vaccinated. These numbers and what we are seeing across the country reveal two truths about the current state of the pandemic: On the one hand, we have seen the successes of our vaccination program over the last eight months, with cases, hospitalizations, and deaths far lower than the peaks we saw in January. And yet, on the other hand, we are starting to see some new and concerning trends, Walensky said Thursday.

A series of rolling deadlines have been established for those who have yet to get vaccinated, though most sites will require staff to submit proof of vaccination by Sept. 21. Exemptions will be available for religious or health reasons and must be formally requested, documented and approved.
Nearly 75% of Trinity Health employees have already gotten at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine so far. Employees who do not meet criteria for exemption and fail to show proof of vaccination will be fired.
The health system also announced that if federal health authorities recommend a COVID-19 vaccine booster in the future, workers will need to submit proof showing that they got the booster dose.
