4 charged with stealing catalytic converters in Jersey City, and another theft is thwarted

Four Pennsylvania men attempting to steal a highly sought car part for its value as a recyclable were arrested by Jersey City police, authorities said.
Police on patrol in the area of Christopher Columbus Drive and Monmouth Street Downtown at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday heard the sound of a rolling jack and then saw four men in the process of stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle, city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.
Both locally and across the country, the vehicle part is being stolen at an alarming rate because it contains precious metals platinum, palladium and rhodium. The value per ounce of platinum is roughly $1,200, palladium $2,800 and rhodium a whopping $28,000.

Fatal collision under investigation in Jersey City ×
The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is investigating a serious, single-vehicle motor vehicle crash that occurred just before 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28.
According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, the crash occurred on Christopher Columbus Drive near the Merseles Street split in Jersey City in which the passenger in the vehicle was killed and the driver in critical condition.
According to the initial investigation, the driver – a 30-year-old Jersey City man – was traveling westbound on Columbus Drive approaching the roadway split when his vehicle, a 1996 Honda Civic, struck the attenuator-protected guard rail.
Authorities in Hudson County are investigating the cause of a crash that fatally injured at least one victim in a section of Jersey City Sunday.
The early morning collision happened in the city s downtown at Merseles Street and Christopher Columbus Drive just before 3:30 a.m.
According to a preliminary investigation, police arrived at the scene and found the crashed vehicle with two unconscious victims inside.
Police say the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver suffered severe injuries.
The Hudson County Prosecutor s Office was notified of the fatal crash and police closed the area to traffic for the investigation.
