Gas Explosion Leaves Six Seriously Injured

Friday, 15 January 2021, 5:47 pm All work with gas must be done by the book – because when things go wrong, the consequences can be grave, says WorkSafe. Certifying gasfitter Gregory John Smith was repairing a fireplace at a home in Christchurch in July 2019. As part of the repairs he removed a gas valve, which is used to control the flow of gas. He advised he would return the next day to complete the repairs. “However, Smith had not disconnected the gas supply to the heater (by capping the open pipe) before leaving and did not instruct residents of the property not to turn the gas supply back on,” says WorkSafe’s Manager

STUFF Christchurch teacher Denise Robinson-Winskill was run over twice by her husband in the driveway of their home in 2013. Police have not closed the file. Seven years after Denise Robinson-Winskill was killed by her husband as he reversed his flat-deck truck, the investigation remains open. Sam Sherwood revisits the case. Denise Robinson-Winskill was in the sheep pen taking some photographs of a newborn lamb when her husband, Jon Winskill, beckoned her over to help. It was about 7.30pm, October 23, 2013. The 56-year-old spraying contractor was on his truck, a 1980 Toyota Land Cruiser flat deck, filling the tanks with water, and needed his wife to turn the valve tap off. Denise, 58, wearing pyjamas, gumboots and a raincoat, struggled but managed to turn it off.
