Sometimes we feel like Jesus has abandoned us. A tragedy shakes us. Or we’ve slowly lost purpose and meaning in our lives. We despair at what feels like Jesus’ silence when it may be a step to something greater. But if we have everything we want, we wouldn’t realize how desperately we need Jesus. That leads us to begin our search for Him.

In the last few days, I have been reflecting on the type of eulogy that matters, especially as we constantly face the threats of death. As I think about this, I cast wide the scope of my reading to incorporate the history of eulogy.

Each year at election time in America, and especially during the quadrennial Presidential election season, we hear a chorus of Catholic voices lamenting “single issue voting” or the tendency of pro-life Catholics to make abortion some sort of a “litmus test”.
