A candidate needs a simple majority, or 50% plus one, of the weighted vote to be elected chair.

Legal opinion contends U S Rep Kelly is ineligible to lead state Democratic Party — her camp disagrees

Ashlee Rezin Garcia; Pat Nabong /Sun-Times file. The race for the reins of the Democratic Party of Illinois heated up on Monday with the release of a legal opinion contending that U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly may be ineligible to serve in the top state party post.
