The President instead delivered a taped message giving tribute to the country’s past and present heroes during the commemorative rites.
Malacañang explained that the President’s absence in this year’s public commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan was mainly to ensure the safety of Duterte and his staff amid the continued surge in coronavirus cases.
“The President’s critics are asking why President Rodrigo Duterte has no public event to commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan. Lest they forget, we are under community quarantine, where gatherings are not encouraged,” Roque said.

MANILA: Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar has branded as “fake news” the report that President Rodrigo Duterte
(pic) suffered a “mild heart attack”.
“Don’t believe in fake news,” Andanar said in a Facebook post.
In a now-deleted post, Maharlika TV cited “reliable sources” who claimed that Duterte’s public address was canceled on Wednesday because the 76-year-old Chief Executive “suffered a mild stroke”

Duterte’s scheduled talk to the nation on Monday was moved to Wednesday night.
However, Duterte was forced to reschedule anew his address to the nation after many members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) tested positive for the coronavirus disease.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque sought to assure the nation about the President’s health following nasty rumors arising from his decision to postpone his public address this week.

Duterte’s public address originally set this week has been canceled after several members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) contracted the coronavirus disease. The President’s “Talk to the People” will be moved to next week, according to the Palace.

MANILA, April 8 (Xinhua) The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) reported 9,216 new COVID-19 infections on Thursday, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 828,366.
The death toll climbed to 14,119 after 60 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.
The Philippines, which has about 110 million people, has tested over 9.8 million people since the outbreak in January 2020.
