WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) NASA’s headquarters is getting a new name, and it honors the agency’s first Black female engineer Mary Jackson. Jackson “overcame the barriers of segregation and gender bias to become a professional aerospace engineer and leader in ensuring equal opportunities for future generations,” NASA said. She started out in the segregated West Area Computing Unit of NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. A mathematician and aerospace engineer, Jackson eventually led programs that influenced NASA’s hiring and promotion of women. Jackson posthumously received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2019, along with three other African American women who worked at NASA and were highlighted in the 2016 book and movie “Hidden Figures.”

Yet, we didn’t think twice about our school mascot, we were the “Indians.” We cheered his image at games and emblazoned his likeness on yearbooks. It was years later before I heard an Indigenous American Christian speak about her heartbreak at this type of appropriation of tribal culture. I was left reconsidering my perspective and my assumptions. How does our Christian community live as God’s people when we are often either blind to appropriation or heartbroken at the pervasiveness of it? We are meant to embrace our unified identity as the people of God and help bring God’s purpose and blessing to the world, yet our experience of the world vastly differs.
