Jacksonville Catholic school honored with national award

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville school is receiving recognition from the U.S. Department of Education for its efforts when it comes to the environment and sustainability.
The Department of Education announced Thursday that Christ the King Catholic School was named a Green Ribbon School, joining 26 other schools, three early learning centers, five school districts and five post-secondary institutions, which were also honored.
“The pandemic has driven home the vital importance of school buildings and grounds; health and wellness; and hands-on authentic learning,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “I congratulate the selected schools, districts, and postsecondary institutions, which are, through their sustainability practices, offering healthy, safe, efficient school environments and protecting our planet. WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Three schools in Wilmington were honored by the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday.
According to a press release, D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy and Wrightsville Beach Elementary School were both named Green Ribbon Schools while UNC-Wilmington was recognized as a Postsecondary Sustainability Awardee.
These honors were part of the Education Departmentâs Green Ribbon Schools program, which recognizes schools, districts, and colleges/universities for âtheir innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.â

A teenage girl is dead and a fellow student is in custody after a stabbing at a Leduc high school Monday morning.
Leduc RCMP responded to a 911 call just before 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic School, on the city’s east side.

There, officers found a 17-year-old girl who had been stabbed inside a classroom, RCMP Insp. Dale Kendall told reporters.
The student was rushed to hospital in critical condition in a STARS air ambulance. She was flown to University of Alberta Hospital, where she later died.
