Trial Date Set For Man Charged With Shooting Hopkinsville Police Officer

A trial date has been set for a Clarksville man accused of shooting and injuring a Hopkinsville Police officer in February 2019. Keith Kuzyk and his public defender Rick Sanborn appeared virtually for a pretrial conference before Christian Circuit Judge John Atkins Wednesday morning. Judge Atkins set Kuzyk’s three-day trial to begin on September 13th. Kuzyk is charged with attempted murder of a police officer, first-degree assault, felony auto theft, first-degree wanton endangerment, receiving stolen property, and fleeing or evading police. The charges are in connection to a carjacking at the Hopkinsville Walmart on February 18, 2019, when a woman called 911 reporting a masked gunman stole her Chevy Tahoe.

S Vine St shooting suspect could have favorable resolution

The first jury trial scheduled to take place in Christian County in around a year was postponed Monday morning after the victim in the case did not appear in court despite being allegedly subpoenaed. Jury trials were postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Christian County Circuit Court Judge John Atkins was scheduled to hear the case of Travis Mayes, 39, who is accused of a South Vine Street shooting case in February 2020, which involved the shooting and injury of Derrell Bateman. As the court was meant to begin jury selection for the trial Monday morning, Bateman failed to appear in court, forcing Atkins to postpone the trial for another three months.
