Lessons from Dudley Smith Farm brings research from field to farmers

URBANA, Ill. – Put the farm first this summer with research updates and practical information farmers and ranchers can use straight from the fields of Dudley Smith Farm in Central Illinois. Recognizing the economic challenges facing Illinois agriculture and rural communities, Dudley Smith Jr. gave his 226-acre Christian County farm and an endowment to University of Illinois in 1993. Smith championed adopting agricultural technological advances and continues today with the farm serving as a field research site partially managed by University of Illinois Extension.

Haiti Benefit Auction set to begin Friday with new location at Ag Expo Center

Multiple forms of payment will be accepted, from cards to cash to checks, and numerous items are for grabs, including quilts, tools, buildings, farm equipment, lumber, toys, baked goods, furniture, hunting blinds and much more. The event will take place at the new Ag. Expo Event Center on Pembroke Road behind the Christian County Extension Office, beginning at 4 p.m. Friday with a catfish dinner and singing, with the auction to follow. Saturday kicks off at 6 a.m. with a buffet breakfast and the main auction begins at 8:30 a.m. there will be an ongoing silent auction, and food will be available the bulk of the day.

Master Gardener The Christian County Master Gardener Association announces Allie Maternowski is the recipient of its Gift for Horticultural Education. Allie is a junior studying agriculture science and horticulture at Murray State University. She is an excellent student and is already involved in horticulture research at the University of Kentucky Research and Education Center in Princeton as a student employee. This $1,000 gift is awarded annually to third- or fourth-year college students pursuing a degree in horticulture or a related field. The purpose of the gift is to help with student’s expenses in their final years of pursuing a degree. Funding comes from Master Gardener community projects, including the Garden and Outdoor Living EXPO. For more information, contact the Christian County Extension Office at 270-886-6328.
