Judge declares mistrial on murder count in Short Bethel Street trial

Following the conclusion of the jury trial against Shakkory Willis, 28, who is accused in the January, 2019 Short Bethel Street murder, Christian Circuit Court Judge John Atkins declared a mistrial on the single count of murder after the jury could not come to a verdict Tuesday afternoon. However, the jury did find Willis guilty on all of his other charges; first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor. Willis, along with Lane Carter, 23, James Yates, 24, Tia Ochs, 19, Madison Wilson, 20, and Korey Zivotin, was accused of planning to rob Coryvan Thomas, 20, of either $30,000 in cash or $30,000 worth of marijuana, that they were told was inside the home. The robbery later led to the shooting death of Thomas and his roommate Dylan Stewart, being shot in the leg.

Opening statements from Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling and public defender Eric Bearden kicked trial off, with Boling describing the alleged plan for a robbery that was set to take place the night of the shooting. He describes it as a robbery gone wrong, as once the two juvenile females were inside, they found nothing worth taking like they had been told there would be Boling insists that Willis was the one who confronted Thomas and assaulted him for more information, and that’s when the fatal shooting occurred.

Hearing Continued In Oak Grove Stabbing Case

A woman charged in connection to a stabbing in Oak Grove appeared in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday morning. Katrina Grandberry is accused of stabbing a 47-year old woman in a home on Pembroke-Oak Grove Road in Oak Grove on December 14, 2020. Oak Grove police reported officers were able to get the knife away from Grandberry and separate the two women. Officers said the victim suffered serious injuries from the stabbing and Grandberry suffered minor injuries. During a pretrial conference Wednesday morning, Grandberry appeared virtually from the Christian County Jail and her public defender, Eric Bearden appeared in the courtroom before Judge John Atkins who continued the hearing to 1:00 the afternoon of August 18.
