The USA women’s basketball team began its quest for a seventh straight gold medal with an 81-72 win over Nigeria on Tuesday morning. It was the 50th consecutive win in Olympic play for the Americans, a streak that dates back to 1992.
Sue Bird did not score but recorded 13 assists. Only one US player A’ja Wilson scored more than 13
points. Diana Taurasi making a record 33rd Olympic appearance scored 10 points in the first half and led the team with a +28 +/- in 23 minutes of action. Breanna Stewart finished with nine points and 11 boards while Tina Charles had six points and six rebounds. Napheesa Collier played an uneventful two minutes.

POWAY, CA Poway resident Kelsey Plum made all seven of her 1-point shots en route to a game-high 12 points as the United States Olympic women s 3X3 basketball team defeated Romania, 22-11, Sunday in a pool round game in Tokyo.
The Americans never trailed and were only tied twice, 3-3 and 4-4. Plum made a 2-point basket to begin a 6-1 run that spanned one minute, 42 seconds that turned a 7-6 U.S. lead into a 13-7 advantage.
