More than 100 Staten Islanders have died this month from coronavirus (COVID-19) complications, the latest city Health Department data shows. Another eight deaths reported Wednesday afternoon increased the borough’s overall suspected COVID-19 death toll to 1,238 including 107 in December. At the same time, 324 new confirmed coronavirus cases were reported on Staten Island in the past 24 hours, according to the most recent data available. An additional 243 were recorded from Monday to Tuesday. The fatalities include 1,043 Staten Islanders with confirmed COVID-19 cases, up six from Tuesday.

While the first doses of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine were administered Monday on Staten Island, new cases and hospitalizations once again climbed on the borough as the country’s death toll surpassed 300,000. There were 235 new cases reported since Sunday, according to city Health Department data, after 277 positive tests were tallied between Saturday and Sunday. In total, 25,350 borough residents have tested positive for the virus, the data shows. As of 1 p.m. Monday, 1,188 borough residents are believed to have succumbed to the disease, which represented a drop of two from yesterday’s total when seven new deaths were initially considered “probable.”
