The man who ran the defense and special teams at Morgan State University in the late 1990s was Dexter Davis, a former NFL defensive back who declared for the 1991 draft before finishing his degree at Clemson. A back injury and head-related trauma cut Davis career short in 1997, and when he began coaching, he took undergraduate classes alongside his players.
Morgan State had once been a Black college football power, producing 34 draft picks (including Hall of Famers Willie Lanier, Rosey Brown and Leroy Kelly) from 1951-82. But the east Baltimore school slipped in stature as drugs tore through its surrounding neighborhoods and the city s violent crime rates climbed.

Thatâs one reason why Coach Jilleen Pfarr stepped up to help out.
âI started the home school teams 10 years ago,â said Pfarr who was a runner in high school and in college.
She began the Homeschool Eagles, teams for boys and girls around the Stateline Area in grades fourth through 12th with such programs as cross country running and track and field.
Recently, the Eagles attended the national cross country championship tournament in Dayton, Tennessee.
âWe brought home four trophies,â Pfarr said.
The tournament was sponsored by the National Association of Christian Athletes and held at Fort Bluff Camp, where participants were housed and fed.

MACOMB/MOLINE Six students graduating from Western Illinois University at the end of the Fall 2020 semester have received the highest recognition from their colleges for their overall academic excellence by being named a College Scholar.
The Fall 2020 Commencement and Scholars ceremonies, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19, will be held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ceremonies will be launched by college on WIU s Facebook page and YouTube channel at 10 a.m. Dec. 19.

Surrounded by educators from throughout her Gary schools career, Brown was one of six Lake County seniors to learn Thursday that they had received a full-ride Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. I know it s not one in a million, but that s how it feels, one in a million, especially because I m in Gary and they really don t expect much out of us, but â Brown said, breaking off in tears.
