Higher temps and dryer skies in the Killeen forecast for next few days

A rapid rain storm Tuesday dropped more than a half-inch of rain in less than an hour in Killeen. Between 1:56 p.m. and 2:56 p.m. Tuesday, the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport recorded a total of 0.54 inches of rain. Tuesday’s rain was part of a widespread system that moved through the area from the western part of the state. With the rainfall amounts Tuesday, the Killeen area has gotten nearly 3 inches over the last three weeks, which has improved drought conditions across Central Texas. Rain chances for today are around 30%. As the rain moves out of the area, temperatures should gradually begin to rise again.

Rain possible for Killeen by this afternoon

Killeen-area residents could see some rain move through the area beginning around noon today. The best rain chances today could be between noon and around 8 or 9 p.m., said National Weather Service meteorologist Juan Hernandez. Rain chances are about 70% today. The system, that is developing in the western part of the state, could bring about an inch of rain. Hernandez said the rain is expected to be widespread, with heavy rainfall being the primary threat. A potentially severe storm with small hail could not be ruled out, however. After 9 p.m., the storm chances will appear to shift to the east as the system moves out of the area, Hernandez said.

Killeen airport to receive more federal grant funding

Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport will receive two Federal Aviation Administration grants totaling $810,000 for improvements to its property, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s office announced Tuesday morning. One grant is for $450,000 for the construction of a new building. The other is for $360,000 for the construction or improvement of a parking lot. Hilary Shine, spokeswoman for the city of Killeen, said the $450,000 grant was for the design only of a corporate hangar. The $360,000 grant is for minor repairs to the parking lot, which would include a slurry seal and remarking. “Texas’ population grows with each passing day, and as more people travel around our state, it’s important our infrastructure is able to meet local demand,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I applaud this announcement and I look forward to seeing the impact this grant will have on travelers in Bell County.”

NWS: Potentially severe storms possible for Killeen area ahead of cold front

UPDATE, 6:50 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of Central Texas until 10 p.m. tonight. The alerted area includes all of Bell, Coryell and Lampasas counties. A cold front that is expected to drop temperatures well below normal may be preceded by another round of potentially severe storms in the Killeen area. The Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport has recorded nearly a quarter-inch of rain Sunday morning, according to data from the National Weather Service. We have a cold front that s making its way south, said Jason Godwin, meteorologist with the NWS. That front right now is actually just kind of hitting the west side of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex right now. It will probably be getting to the Killeen area around 5 or 6 (p.m.) tonight.

Killeen airport to receive piece of a COVID relief grant

The Skylark Airfield in Killeen is set to receive $13,000 as part of a $100,000 grant, U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, announced. The grant is part of COVID-19 relief funds and the rest of the funds are going to other Central Texas airports. The Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport received COVID relief funding in previous disbursements. “The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted individuals, families, and businesses in ways we never expected, and our local airports are no exception,” Carter said. “I am hopeful that these grants will ease the burden and aid in recovery as we work towards the future.” Hilary Shine, the spokeswoman for the city of Killeen, provided a statement on the use of the funds via email Friday.
