Heights officials cancel games after gun incident at Recreation Center
In the aftermath of a gun incident Saturday at a Harker Heights volleyball tournament, the Harker Heights Recreation Department canceled all remaining games and practices for the week.
âParks and Recreation staff are currently discussing ways to better ensure participant and spectator safety moving forward,â Harker Heights Assistant City Manager Jerry Bark said Monday. âWe have halted all games and practices for this week so that staff has the opportunity to regroup.â
Harker Heights police arrested two men Saturday after they allegedly drew their guns during a youth volleyball tournament at a gymnasium in Harker Heights. The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harker Heights Recreation Center, 307 Millers Crossing.

The Killeen City Council unanimously approved the appointment of a new communications director Tuesday. The council also discussed the possibility of moving the Bell County Annex downtown.
In a 6-0 vote, the council voted to confirm the appointment of Janell J. Lewis Ford as the cityâs new Director of Communications. She will assume her role July 19 and make an annual salary of $105,000.
Mayor Pro Tem Debbie Nash-King was not in attendance at Tuesdayâs meeting.
The cityâs current communications director, Hilary Shine, is retiring Aug. 1 after 20 years of service to the city.
Ford had lived in Killeen as a child due to both of her parents being stationed at Fort Hood. Now, sheâs back and ready to assume her role come July 19.
City Manager Kent Cagle officially presented the proposed Fiscal Year 2022 budget at the Killeen City Council workshop Tuesday, a week later than planned.
The presentation was delayed by a week due to city council failing to meet quorum on July 6.
Cagle presented the $244.7 million budget while fielding questions from council members. Mayor Pro Tem Debbie Nash-King was not in attendance.

Cagle first drew comparisons between Killeen and âsimilar cities,â which he described as cities that were either near a military installation, close to Killeen in population, or were nearby.
âKilleen just does not perform particularly well when compared to similar cities,â Cagle said.
After having no quorum for a meeting last week, the Killeen City Council will pick up this Tuesday for an important discussion about the budget, along with consideration of the appointment of a new director of communications.
The original meeting to discuss the budget was scheduled for July 6 at 5 p.m., but it was called off after four council members could not attend.
Tuesday, council is expected to vote on a date to schedule a public hearing regarding the annual budget for the fiscal year 2022.
In addition, there will also be a meeting on July 17 that will discuss the budget and budget-related items, according to the cityâs spokesperson, Hilary Shine. Itâs scheduled for 9 a.m. at City Hall.
