WATERTOWN â City Council members made it clear on Monday night: They want Jefferson County dispatchers to handle emergency medical calls for the cityâs fire department.
Council members informally agreed on Monday that they will vote on a resolution next week that would make a major change that would mean county dispatch would determine which EMS calls the fire department would go on.
County dispatchers now notify the fire department after a call comes in to them and they automatically send out a fire engine to the scene. They also use a complicated system, called Emergency Management Dispatch, or EMD, to determine the level of service that goes out on calls for most of the other towns in the county.

Watertown City Council to vote on future of fire departmentâs heavy rescue truck Watertown Fire Department rescue truck (Source: WWNY) By 7 News Staff | December 18, 2020 at 9:59 PM EST - Updated December 18 at 10:09 PM
WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Watertown City Council will vote Monday night on the future of the city fire departmentâs heavy rescue truck.
A resolution on the council agenda would take the rescue truck off the road and no longer have the fire department respond to emergency medical calls.
It would leave EMS response up to only Guilfoyle Ambulance Service.
The fire union has railed against the move, saying it violates their contract and hurts public safety.
