Hops Burger Bar employees take a stand over COVID-19 concerns
The workers sent management a 10-point demand which included paid sick-leave, hazard pay, and a higher standard of COVID-19 protocols. Author: Adaure Achumba Updated: 6:48 AM EST December 25, 2020
GREENSBORO, N.C. As COVID-19 cases rise across the state, Hops Burger Bar employees in the Triad have sent a list of demands to management over coronavirus concerns.
The workers said they wanted more protection and better safety standards.
Some workers said they are taking a stand not just to protect themselves but to also look out for customers. Our issue is that no one was aware that people that they were working alongside were sick with Covid. They didn t tell people that they were potentially exposed, said Lilly Thorne, a host at Hops Burger Bar.
âThey couldnât really give us any reason as to why they werenât more urgent about communicating with us,â said Thorne, who has worked at Hops for about a year and a half.
Hops is a popular restaurant with three locations in the Triad. Money.com put it at No. 18 on a list of the 20 Best Burger Spots in the U.S., based on Yelp.com reviews.
Even after some employees confronted management after finding out about the latest case on Dec. 16, the restaurant wasn t shut down, said Edy Hayden, a server at the Spring Garden location.

Did you even think you could get it again? WFMY News 2 s Jess Winters asked. Not this soon, maybe in six or eight months but not this soon so it was a complete shock, he continued.
He said he had some pretty bad symptoms both times. I had overwhelming fatigue, I believe the body aches were similar the second time, they were more intense.
The experience the second time around was more intense overall because his wife Karen got it too. The aches, the fatigue, and I also lost my sense of taste and smell, Karen stated. I believe it was easier for me to have it with him versus when he had it alone the first time due to the isolation, he had to quarantine by himself.
