The largest wildfire in the U.S. continues to grow and threaten homes in southern Central Oregon. With high temperatures and winds forecast Wednesday, the National Weather Service has issued red-flag warnings for much of Eastern and Central Oregon. The teams that coordinate wildfire response in the Pacific Northwest are now at their highest alert level as agencies seek to share resources and balance competing priorities. New fires continue to pop up. And then there’s the wildfire smoke. And a new brushfire south of Portland closed a highway and prompted fresh evacuations early Wednesday evening.

Firefighters across Oregon have already begun fighting fires in the 2021 wildfire season. But with months more to go, experts are warning people in urban areas not to let their guard down. "We've been doing a lot of site visits for people who are wanting to know, are their homes safe or are they in danger? " said Tammy Owen, a public information officer with Clackamas Fire District #1.

ESTACADA, Ore. Three young people died and two were injured in a crash Monday night near Estacada, the Clackamas County Sheriff s Office reported Tuesday.
The crash happened at 9:20 p.m. in the area of South Redland Road and South Springwater Road, near Milo McIver State Park.
A witness told sheriff s deputies that the driver of a black sedan appeared to lose control of the car and go into a spin. The sedan crossed the road s center line and crashed into an oncoming Ford F350 pickup truck.
Five teens, ages 14-18, were in the black sedan. Two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital and was later pronounced dead. The fourth passenger, a 17-year-old, is being treated for unspecified injuries at a hospital.

Fred Charlton, who was the chief of the Clackamas Fire District until his May 1 retirement, is Hillsboro Fire s new division chief of training.
Charlton s new position in Hillsboro is one subject of a retaliation and discrimination complaint against the city and two other top Hillsboro Fire officials by two current employees, who had applied for the role but weren t hired, according to the complaint.
Clackamas Fire s leadership was criticized for its handling of the Riverside Fire last September, which burned nearly 150,000 acres in the Clackamas River basin and came within a half-mile of Estacada s commercial core.
