City Unveils New Name For Valencia Ice Station

Crews have worked to clean the 93,000 square-foot facility “from top to bottom,” in addition to installing new lighting and setting up high-speed internet access connections, which residents will be able to connect to for free. “City staff are also working to ensure all systems needed to operate the facility work properly to create a high quality, safe experience for all users,” January’s statement reads. The City is currently in the process of selecting a management company to oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility once it reopens later this year. “So think of it as an event center, ice skating center, a combination of both,” Santa Clarita Mayor Bill Miranda said in an interview back in December. “That’s going to happen, we’re hoping it’ll happen late first quarter, but it might not be until second quarter.”

Construction of the building itself is still underway, along with outdoor recreation areas including a basketball court, a passive turf play area, and space for other outdoor events. The foundation for both the main building and the public restrooms has been poured, and the structural steel installation for the buildings has been erected. Additionally, the roof and walls of the center have been installed, and roadway modifications for the nearby areas along Sierra Highway are currently underway. Phase three of the new community center is expected to be completed by the end of March.  “You’re going to love it,” Miranda said. “You’re going to love the location, you’re going to love the grounds, you’re going to love the building and everything that’s in the building.”

However, officials say that the visuals of the station are not the only things being updated. Crews have worked to clean the facility “from top to bottom,” in addition to installing new lighting and setting up high-speed internet access connections, which residents will be able to connect to for free. “City staff are also working to ensure all systems needed to operate the facility work properly to create a high quality, safe experience for all users,” Friday’s statement reads. The City is currently in the process of selecting a management company to oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility once it reopens later this year.

“I think very few true volunteers are looking for recognition for their efforts. Being able to volunteer is a great gift in itself,” Cheri said at the time. “I always feel that I’m receiving so much more than I’m giving. However, to be a Woman of the Year in Santa Clarita is an amazing honor.” In 2012, Cheri was named the “Woman of the Year” by the Los Angeles County 5th Supervisorial District and Commision for Women, and in 2017 she was named the “Volunteer of the Year” by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. Then, in 2019, both Cheri and Don were named the recipients of the “Silver Spur” community service award by College of the Canyons for their involvement in higher education.
