Arts Workers of Color in Los Angeles Earn 35 Percent Less in Wages Than Their White Colleagues, a New Study Finds

Los Angeles arts workers who identify as Black, Indigenous, or as People of Color (BIPOC) make less than their white counterparts on average, a new study released today found. Additionally, entry-level workers across the sector are paid wages lower than the cost of living in the area, regardless of race. The report, which was put together by the L.A. County Department of Arts and Culture with the Center for Business and Management of the Arts (CBMArts) at Claremont Graduate University, sought to quantify the disparity in wages among the region’s creative workforce, and study its effects on individuals.

In Memoriam — Fraser Powlison

Share This: Fraser Powlison, associate professor emeritus of teacher education, died of natural causes Feb. 27. He was 89. Powlison joined Cal State Fullerton’s faculty in 1967 and received emeritus status in 1986. Born in Los Angeles, he also was a licensed psychologist and marriage and family counselor with a private psychotherapy practice in Fullerton. He is remembered for helping his clients recognize their inner strengths and create better lives for themselves.  He earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Claremont Graduate University and a bachelor’s degree in English literature, philosophy and religion, and Latin American studies from Pomona College. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army Infantry as a first lieutenant.

For a teenager, it was an unexpected and shocking diagnosis: blood tests and an ultrasound confirmed that, at 13, Hayley Cockman had gone into premature menopause. Her periods had stopped within a year of starting, and then symptoms such as night sweats, hot flushes and poor concentration kicked in. At school, I d be sitting in class, having a hot flush and thinking, What s going on? I didn t have a clue, says Hayley.  For a teenager, it was an unexpected and shocking diagnosis: blood tests and an ultrasound confirmed that, at 13, Hayley Cockman had gone into premature menopause I kept telling my mum, I feel weird , and she would ask, What do you mean, you feel weird? and I d say, I don t know.
