Shirley McBay, UGA s first Black PhD graduate, urged representation in STEM

Leigh Beeson UGA Today It’s been over 30 years since Shirley Mathis McBay first went to Capitol Hill with an urgent message. She implored members of Congress to take action to increase the numbers of minorities and women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. And she didn’t mince words. “In the search for knowledge in science and engineering, the worst intellectual crime one can commit is to prejudice one’s results, to prejudge how something will turn out. However, this is precisely what we are doing when we fail from elementary school to graduate school to encourage women and minorities to enter the fields of science and engineering,” McBay told the congressional panel, titled “Reclaiming Human Talent.”

Local Political Strategists Analyze Georgia s Senate Elections

Greer was a guest on WABE’s “Morning Edition” with host Lisa Rayam, who asked Greer her thoughts on voter trends this election. Greer said the race results and trend numbers tell her it was more “about the candidates and not necessarily about the party. Because if it were about the party itself, then you would’ve had both candidates lock in step when it comes to the number of votes they received.”

Rapper Turnt Preacher is Back! Mase Named Pastor At Gathering Oasis Church in Atlanta

Georgia Advocates Hope Young Black Progressive Voters Can Swing Senate Runoffs

“Water is a human right. Accessibility to water and affordability to water is a human right.” The political science student at Clark Atlanta University says issues such as climate change are getting her to vote again in Georgia’s January runoffs.  Voters under 30 years old in Georgia came out in record numbers to cast their ballots in the general election. And political parties and advocates want to make sure young progressive voters have the same energy to show up to polls again for the runoff races. Data shows that young voters made up 20% of Georgians who cast ballots in the general election, according to the non-partisan Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning Engagement, or CIRCLE, at Tufts University. And those votes, especially from young Black voters, helped President-elect Joe Biden clinch the state in November. Democratic candidates want to make sure these voters show up again.
