This International Women’s Day, VisitScotland is shining a spotlight on women in the world of whisky. We’ll drink to that!
The role of women in the whisky industry has drastically evolved over the years and there are great stories about trailblazers and pioneering women from across Scotland.
So, to celebrate bad-ass women around the world, VisitScotland has highlighted a selection of women, past and present, who have made their mark on an industry that has traditionally been seen as a man’s world.
HISTORY-MAKERS
Helen Cumming – Cardhu Distillery, Speyside
Helen Cumming and her husband owned Cardow Farm, which would later become known as Cardhu, in the early 1800s. She worked illicitly to produce whisky for decades taking charge of the stills while her husband worked in the fields.

Samir Khan-Young, above, has been working round the clock to support the NHS in its Covid-19 response.
The former Bannerman High School pupil started his Engineering: Design and Manufacture Graduate Apprenticeship at Thales in 2017 and has established himself as a key member of the team.Â
Samir, who plays football for Shettleston FC, believes his greatest achievement to date has been working nightshifts for Thalesâ Manufacturing Team as they produced PPE for NHS frontline workers.
He said: âI was delighted to put my skills to good use during lockdown as part of the nightshift team who were making PPE for NHS staff. It was a rewarding experience as we were delivering a vital service as efficiently as possible.

A delivery driver in Vietnam has been hailed a hero after managing to catch a toddler who fell from a 12th floor balcony.
On Sunday, February 28, Nguyen Ngoc Manh was waiting to deliver a package to an apartment in a Hanoi high-rise building. As he sat in his truck, he could hear a child’s crying and a woman’s screaming above him. He just assumed it was another day with an emotional child.

The reality was far worse. On a 12th storey balcony around 164ft in the air, a little girl was teetering on the edge, to the horror of onlookers in other buildings and the street. Fortunately, the driver leaped into action.
