Animals at Austin Zoo make it through severe winter storm
The Austin Zoo is rebuilding after last week s storm left several trees snapped and some water pipes and pumps frozen, but zookeepers confirm the animals made it through.
AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Zoo in the southwest part of the city is still rebuilding after the winter weather took a toll on some of its infrastructure. Luckily, zookeepers confirm animals are okay, but it was an uphill battle to make sure they survived. A lot of broken branches are down. I mean, they were crashing around us the whole time we were here, said Scott Chambers, director of animal care and veterinary services at the Austin Zoo.
An anonymous call was made to police in San Antonio, Texas during the recent winter storm, informing them a tiger may need rescuing.
When they arrived, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office found a six-month-old tigress. Wearing a harness and underfed, it was clear she was being kept as a pet, which is illegal in the county.
“When [deputies] came out on the scene, they found this beautiful young lady in temperatures that weren’t suitable for her, and actually in living conditions that weren’t suitable for her either,” says Sheriff Javier Salazar.
Her rescuers decided to name her Elsa, after the main character in the animated film Frozen .
