Turner played a critical role as director of the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1983 to 1993 by opening up an institution then known for artistic excellence but also for its frosty elitism and tepid enthusiasm for contemporary art. Turner, who died Dec. 17 at his home in Philadelphia of congestive heart failure at age 93, according to his family, came to the Cleveland museum as a veteran director.

Evan Hopkins Turner, former director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, dies at 93 Valerie Russ, The Philadelphia Inquirer Evan Hopkins Turner, 93, an art historian who was director of both the Philadelphia Museum of Art and, later, the Cleveland Museum of Art, died Thursday, Dec. 17, from congestive heart failure at his home in Philadelphia. Dr. Turner came to Philadelphia after a directorship at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1964. He succeeded Henri Marceau as director of Philadelphia’s museum and remained director until 1978. His dedication to art came from both from his academic studies, which included three degrees including a doctorate in art history from Harvard, and also through his family legacy.

CLEVELAND, OH .- Recent acquisitions by the Cleveland Museum of Art include Paul Fehér’s Muse with Violin Screen, a masterpiece in metalwork realized in 1930 by one of the most acclaimed foundries in the U.S.; a 17th-century Japanese handscroll depicting Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers that augments the museum’s renowned collection of Asian paintings; a modernist embroidery by Marguerite Zorach that reinforces the CMA’s commitment to collecting work by women artists; and 10 contemporary videos that significantly enhance the museum’s representation of this important time-based medium.
