Man dead after being struck by train A man struck by a train in western Cleveland County early Monday morning has died. Jovonne Avery Dimsdale, of Forest City, died in a Spartanburg hospital from injuries sustained in the incident, which occurred around near midnight Sunday on the train tracks near the intersection of Ellenboro Road and N.C. 120. The train engineer said he observed what looked like a person lying on the tracks and could not stop before hitting them, said Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman.  Deputies with the Cleveland County Sheriff s Office, first responders from Cleveland County EMS and No. 7 Volunteer Fire Department were able to locate Dimsdale, still alive and breathing on the tracks.

Officers recognized at Peace Officers Memorial ceremony Dozens of law enforcement officers and community members gathered on Friday to honor the memories of seven police officers and sheriff’s deputies killed in the line of duty. The service was held in advance of Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, which is celebrated on May 15. For each of the seven people listed on the Fallen Heroes Monument, officers and sheriff’s deputies read aloud a brief overview of their services, their last day of watch and how they died. Each report was concluded with the ringing of a silver bell. Also included in this year’s memorial were remembrances for Tyler Herndon, a Cleveland County native and Mount Holly police officer who was shot and killed in December 2020.

2 hrs ago The Cleveland County District Court has filed charges recently related to an assortment of alleged crimes on the following people: •  Cockfighting: Victor Manuel Ortega Jr., 33, of El Reno, was charged Thursday with a felony count of training a bird for fighting and a misdemeanor count of being a spectator for a cockfight. Carlos Ruiz, 36, of Noble, was charged the same day with a felony count of keeping a place, equipment and facility for cockfighting in concert and together with Nancy Torres-Lugo. According to a court affidavit, the Cleveland County Sheriff s Office responded April 7 to the 14800 block of 26B Street in Noble in reference to an alleged cockfight and animal cruelty complaint.
