DOVER Jennifer Maurer, a nurse, was the first employee of Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as the hospital began immunizing its employees on Wednesday morning.
A total of 70 caregivers were vaccinated Wednesday, according to Darrin Lautenschleger, director of community relations at the hospital. Additional vaccinations of hospital caregivers are being scheduled and will continue according to the doses that will be available and delivered to the hospital through Cleveland Clinic, he said.
The process will continue through the next several weeks.
During Phase 1 of the state s vaccination distribution plan, vaccine supply will be limited, and Ohio will focus on vaccinating those who wish to be vaccinated in the critical Phase 1A groups, which include healthcare workers, EMS responders and residents and staff at nursing homes.
But health officials are urging the general public to be patient. There is great interest in being vaccinated, said Jennifer Demuth, director of health promotion & community relations for the health department. The current supply is very limited, and we need to follow the prioritization list.
The first group to receive the vaccine will be emergency room physicians who are not receiving vaccines from a healthcare system. We are so thankful that people have shown an interest, but we ask that they not call us for the vaccine, Demuth said. We will notify groups when they are eligible to receive it.

Data from NPR show 81% of the Tuscarawas County hospital s adult inpatient beds are full, and more than half of those are coronavirus patients. Union ER Dr. Kevin Miller says they’re facing an uphill battle. I feel like we ve been treading water now for the last several weeks, he said.
Miller says he s grateful the hospital has adapted and found room to be able to handle the surge, but he fears the day when perhaps they may no longer be able to.
