New Alzheimer s drug not for most dementia patients, docs say Erika Edwards © Provided by NBC News Dr. David Reuben s phone started ringing nonstop Monday, after the Food and Drug Administration approved the first new drug for Alzheimer s disease in nearly two decades. Reuben, director of the UCLA Alzheimer s and Dementia Care Program, said patients and, more often, patient s families, were clamoring for the drug. They ask, How can we get Mom on this drug? or How can I get this drug? he said. The approval of the drug, called aducanumab, has thrown doctors into a precarious position, forcing them to make difficult decisions about who should receive a pricey therapy with unclear benefits. Reuben also noted that despite approval, the therapy is not immediately available. Last year, an advisory panel to the FDA urged the agency to reject the drug, made by the Massachusetts-based biotech company Biogen, because clinical trials did not show it had a measured
