Seniors within Roaring Fork School District present with scholarships, awards for higher education plans

  Six Roaring Fork School District students were recognized as a finalist or recipient for a scholarship, recent RFSD news releases state. Paige Northrup, a senior at Glenwood Springs High School, won a scholarship from the Dr. Jay Seller Scholarship Program and the Educational Theatre Association Scholarship Matching Program for $2,000, the release stated. Northrup had an excerpt in the press release where she said the audition was virtual and not only qualified her for the scholarship, but also helped her receive 26 callbacks and multiple college offers through schools who attended the Colorado Annual Thespian Conventions. “I submitted a senior audition for Colorado’s Annual Thespian Convention. It included a short monologue and an excerpt from a song in one video…I qualified for and won the Musical Theatre scholarship because I am a senior, an inducted Thespian and declared theatre major,” Northrup wrote.

Vidakovich column: A week that seemed like an eternity

Mike Vidakovich During my senior year at Glenwood Springs High School, our much-anticipated basketball season began on the usual mid-November day in 1978. Our season held an abundance of promise, even though we were kicking off the new campaign minus a couple of starters and some reserve players who were still involved in Glenwood’s successful football run through the playoffs. We were aware that if the football team advanced all the way to the state championship game, our first basketball contest would fall on the night before the title tilt. Moffat County was scheduled for our home opener, and we all knew we could take them even if we were a bit shorthanded.

Obituary: Georgia Haines

January 21, 1926 – November 20, 2020 Georgia Haines, age 94 of Glenwood Springs passed away on November 20th, 2020 from a sudden illness. She was born in Lansing Michigan on January 21, 1926, the second child of Clarence VanAmburg and Clela Williams VanAmburg. She grew up on her Grandparents’ farm outside of Portland Michigan and attended a one room country school until sixth grade. She graduated from Portland High School in 1943, and then attended Adrian College, where she met and married her true love, Bernie Haines in 1946. Bernie had been called to work at Oak Ridge National Laboratories during WWII, and Georgia went to join him and worked as a research assistant there after the war. She finished her undergraduate degree in Mathematics at Michigan State University in 1950, and soon took her first teaching job in Haslett, Michigan.

Basalt, 2 other Roaring Fork district high schools transition to full distance learning ahead of winter break

Glenwood Springs Post Independent Basalt, Roaring Fork and Bridges high schools will be transitioning to distance learning for the remainder of the final week before winter break, due to staffing issues related to COVID-19 quarantines. “Due to diminished staff capacity, Basalt, Roaring Fork and Bridges High Schools will transition to distance learning through the remainder of this week,” according to a statement from the district sent Monday afternoon. Bridges, the district’s alternative high school located in Carbondale, announced its full transition Sunday, while Basalt and Roaring Fork announced their transition on Monday, the release said. “Glenwood Springs High School remains learning in-person at this time,” according to the district statement.
