Glenwood Springs City Council member Shelley Kaup says she will seek reelection to another four-year term to one of council’s two at-large seats in the April 3 election.
“The next few years are critical to help the city recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Grizzly Creek Fire,” Kaup said in a formal statement announcing her reelection bid.
“I have a vision for Glenwood Springs to prioritize quality of life for our residents, strengthen our diverse economy and safeguard our neighborhoods and environment from the impacts of growth,” she said. “My experience and willingness to work through tough issues uniquely qualifies me to get the job done.”
Local governing bodies collectively spent 60 hours behind closed doors in 2020 discussing matters concerning the public.
An annual review of executive sessions conducted by Aspen City Council, Snowmass Village Town Council and the Board of Pitkin County Commissioners shows that combined, they held 36 closed-door meetings last year.
The commissioners held the most meetings, with 20, followed by Aspen City Council Town Council with six.
For commissioners and Aspen elected officials, they held fewer executive sessions in 2020 than in previous years.
County Attorney John Ely said typically the commissioners meet out of the public’s view at least 24 times, or twice a month, in a year.

The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority may redirect roughly $700,000 in Destination 2040 property tax funding to support a pedestrian underpass at 27th Street and Colorado Highway 82.
More than $2 million is still needed to complete the $10.1 million crossing – approved by the Glenwood Springs City Council in August to improve safety at the busy intersection.
The Glenwood Springs City Council on Thursday will discuss RFTA’s proposal to delay a host of service improvement projects and instead focus on underpass construction.
Among the possible deferments are $298,000 dedicated to a downtown Bus Rapid Transit extension and $395,000 to reroute local RFTA buses to Highway 6 and Highway 24.

The Roaring Fork Marketplace commercial center in south Glenwood Springs is preparing to welcome Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply as a new tenant, coming in spring 2021 if all goes as planned.
The Murdoch’s store would occupy the space that formerly was home to an American Furniture Warehouse outlet, until spring 2019 when it closed. Recently, the neighboring Office Depot store also vacated.
Kind Castle will be the first marijuana retail shop to open at the Glenwood Meadows commercial area.
Glenwood Springs City Council last week voted 4-3 to approve the proposal by Kind Castle to construct a new 4,504-square-foot, two story building at the corner of Wulfsohn Road and Flat Tops View Drive.
The location is at the southeast corner of the larger Glenwood Meadows planned unit development (PUD), near the Glenwood Green Apartments.
The retail marijuana shop is planned to take up 3,270 square feet of building space, leaving another 784 square feet for future retail leasing to be determined.
City Council held a lengthy public hearing on Dec. 3, where a range of arguments were made both for and against the application.
