Cook Memorial Library offers nonresident memberships

LA GRANDE — La Grande’s Cook Memorial Library has long offered basic library services to locals living outside La Grande. Starting May 1, nonresidents can purchase memberships that give them access to all of Cook Memorial’s services. Library Director Kip Roberson explained Cook Memorial Library is making the move to distinguish between who lives inside the city limits of La Grande and who does not. Residents of La Grande on a per capita basis spend approximately $50 annually in taxes to support library services, Roberson said, so they receive the full slate of what the library has to offer. As strike deadline approaches, Oregon Tech officials seek state injunction to prevent walkout

As strike deadline approaches, Oregon Tech officials seek state injunction to prevent walkout Approximately 200 full-time faculty at the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) in Klamath Falls in southern Oregon may strike on April 26 if an agreement is not reached between the university and Oregon Tech-American Association of University Professors (OT-AAUP). The union said 92 percent of members voted in favor of the strike authorization on April 2, with nearly the entire membership taking part in the vote. In a last minute effort to block a strike, management has sought an injunction with the Oregon Employment Relations Board. OIT has also filed an unfair labor relations complaint against the OIT-AAUP, claiming failure to bargain in good faith. The union said its lawyer was reviewing the OIT filing, calling it a “delay tactic.”

My Voice: Improving accessibility would improve life for many

My name is Matthew Briney and I am a resident of La Grande who has a disability. I grew up in Union County. My family moved to Cove from Island City for my education to accommodate with my disability, cerebral palsy. After I graduated from high school, my family moved to downtown La Grande for the convenience of not having to travel 20 minutes constantly from Cove to La Grande. This makes doing errands and our activities easier. I was planning to go to college at Eastern Oregon University, and my father would be closer to where he works. The advantage of the house that we moved into was that the college was just a block away and up a hill.

Eastern Oregon Film Festival partners with Liberty Theatre

LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon Film Festival plans to light up the screen at one of La Grande’s seminal landmarks. The film festival, which was held only online last year due to the pandemic, aims to serve moviegoers and film buffs a special treat this October — the festival will take place in the Liberty Theatre, the newly renovated historic building that dates back to 1910. There also will be showings at the performing arts space HQ in downtown La Grande and the newly renovated Loso Hall at Eastern Oregon University. But the Liberty will be the main attraction. With the new venues, new technology will help increase the overall quality of the festival.
