As a child, Patrick arrived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant.
Without the chance to qualify for financial aid or most merit scholarships in his home state, he grew up knowing that attending college was likely impossible.
But everything changed in 2016 when he received a scholarship from TheDream.US, a private program that has provided scholarships to more than 3,000 students to attend one of more than 70 partnering colleges.
“TheDream.US has given me the hope and courage to become anything that I want to be in life,” he said.
Danbury residents recognized at Honors Program Senior Reception Written by ECSU
The Honors Program at Eastern Connecticut State University recognized graduating seniors at its annual Senior Reception on May 13. The event celebrates seniors who have completed their theses projects as part of the Honors Program s graduation requirements.
Among those recognized were:
Ashley Cubberly of Danbury, who majors in Psychology. Cubberly s thesis is titled Emotional Intelligence and Vocational Personality: How Does Emotional Intelligence Relate to Career Interests in College Students? Cubberly plans to spend a year volunteering with AmeriCorps before attending graduate school.
Cory Struski of Danbury, who majors in Mathematics. Struski s thesis is titled Modeling the Dynamics of Blood Pressure in COMSOL. Struski plans to seek employment in a Connecticut school district.
Richard Freebairn of Bethel inducted into Phi Alpha Theta history honor society Written by Eastern Connecticut State University
Eastern Connecticut State University s History Department inducted 19 students into Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for history students, on May 11.
Among the students was Richard Freebairn of Bethel, a senior majoring in Political Science.
To be invited into Phi Alpha Theta, students must have junior standing with at least 15 credits in history, 12 of which must be completed at Eastern. Inductees must also have at least a 3.5 grade point average of 3.5 or higher, as well as at least a 3.5 GPA in their history classes.

BRANFORD, Conn. Around 2019, Queens-born Wallingford-raised Ravi Patel met Thimble Island Brewing company owner Justin Gargano inquiring about brewing beer out of Gargano s brewery. We kinda hit it off, any good relationship requires a good partnership, said Gargano. We got along real well. I kind of got the idea where he wanted to go with his brand, what he was looking to accomplish, and the synergies were there.
