UDM leader Bantu Holomisa says the Nelson Mandela Bay coalition government is more stable than ever. On Thursday, the DA s Nqaba Bhanga beat the EFF s Amandlangawethu Madaka to win the mayoral chain. Earlier this month, the Nelson Mandela Bay council was ordered by the court to convene a special council meeting to elect a new mayor.  UDM leader General Bantu Holomisa said Nqaba Bhanga s re-election as mayor was a demonstration of the stability of the coalition government.  Holomisa was speaking to News24 a day after Bhanga beat the EFF s Amandlangawethu Madaka by 62 votes to 57 during a two horse-race for the hot seat.

ANC Buffalo City metro councillor fired for selling RDP house, having criminal conviction

iStock Gamnca was found guilty of selling an RDP house in Mdantsane for R300 000. She also has a criminal conviction for a case of assault.   Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Xolile Nqatha has fired Buffalo City metro ANC councillor Ntombizodwa Gamnca with immediate effect, for violating the Municipal Systems Act. In a statement on Tuesday, Nqatha said Gamnca was expelled for her alleged involvement in the sale of immovable property and conviction for a criminal offence. It is understood that Gamnca was found guilty of selling an RDP house in Mdantsane for R300 000. Nqatha said Gamnca violated Item 2 (b) of schedule 1 of the Code of Conduct for Councillors of the Municipal Systems Act (MSA), which states that a councillor must at all times act in the best interest of the municipality and in such a way that credibility and integrity of the municipality are not compromised .

Broke Amathole municipality placed under administration

The embattled Amathole District Municipality has been placed under administration. The Eastern Cape government announced on Thursday morning that its executive council had taken a decision to invoke Section 139 (5) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa into the affairs of the district authority. The Constitution states that the provincial government may impose the Section 139 (5) (a) if a municipality, as a result of a crisis in its financial affairs, is in serious or persistent material breach of its obligations to provide basic services or to meet its financial commitments, or admits that it is unable to meet its obligations or financial commitments.
