What were you working on before the wildfires?
Before the East Troublesome Fire and before the pandemic, I was working on large-scale, immersive virtual reality systems. After graduating college, I volunteered at Gates Planetarium at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and got my feet wet on what it takes to make these large-scale systems work. So, I started my business building media systems. What I learned at DU was that the software we used is so versatile that it can pretty much be used for anything. I went from building servers for entertainment and virtual reality systems and was able to pivot those technologies using slightly different software to help out with the fires.
Sens. Bennet, Hickenlooper Call on Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to Assist Colorado Communities Recovering From Devastating Wildfires
Targeted News Service (Press Releases)
WASHINGTON,
March 9, 2021:
U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, and
John Hickenlooper (D), a member of the
U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, called on
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary
Thomas J. Vilsack to support wildfire recovery efforts in
Colorado after the state faced the three largest wildfires in
Colorado history in 2020.
USDA programs like the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program and the
U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program to ongoing wildfire recovery efforts. While effective, these programs are often hamstrung by administrative hurdles and inconsistent funding.
8 more reasons why this state isn t so great.
1. Fire risk
In 2020, four different fires that burned in Colorado were larger than the largest blaze to ever previously occur in the state. Cameron Peak Fire was 208,663 acres, East Troublesome Fire was 192,560 acres, Mullen Fire burned mostly in Wyoming, but was 176,878 acres, and the Pine Gulch Fire was 139,007 acres – all larger than the Hayman Fire of 2002, which reached 137,760 acres.
Those included, eight of the 10 largest Colorado fires took place in the last decade. As Colorado continues to struggle with drought, dry conditions persist, as does an increased fire risk and a high possibility of large future blazes. It s common for wildfires to impact daily life in the Centennial State, whether that means a weekend off of outdoor recreation or a blaze burning down your own property.

A view of the proposed location for the South Bridge project at Glenwood Springs Airport. Shannon Marvel / Post Independent
No one dismisses the need for the South Bridge Project, but where to construct the alternative route is a subject of debate in Glenwood Springs.
The Glenwood Springs City Council will vote on whether to go with the first option for the project route, which would bore underneath the runway at the municipal airport. That route would begin at Midland Avenue and Four Mile Road, where it would follow Airport Road before tunneling below the airport’s runway. The South Bridge would then cross the Roaring Fork River before connecting to Colorado Highway 82.
