High levels of competence coupled by the cooperative attitudes of members of the Western Reserve Port Authority board of directors are resulting in good things for area business and our Mahoning Valley in general.
The latest appointment to the board, Poland businessman Ed Muransky, came in recent weeks and proves to us that county commissioners, who appoint board members to their multiyear terms, are serious about continuing to keep the bar high in order to continue the good work being done by the port authority.
Muransky, chairman of the board and founder of Muransky Companies, a business management company, also serves as founder, chairman, CEO and majority owner of the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in Boardman.

Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted joined Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel and other state and local officials today to highlight the Mahoning Valley’s numerous multi-million-dollar initiatives to develop a skilled workforce to meet the growing needs of the region’s emerging high-tech markets, including electric vehicle, battery and additive manufacturing.

TRIO Upward Bound, a Department of Education-funded grant that operates out of Eastern Gateway Community College, recently held a virtual entrepreneurship program in which 16 students from Jefferson County high schools participated and completed the pitch competition on the final day. First prize was a new 7th Generation iPod touch. The winner of the 2021 TRIO Upward Bound Young Entrepreneur Competition was Justen Wargo, a senior attending the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School where he is part of the multimedia and design program. His home school is Edison High School. Wargo has been accepted to Shawnee State University and will pursue a bachelor’s degree in game and simulation arts. In December, he received his third academic letter from Edison High School. The entrepreneurship program was promoted by the Ohio Afterschool Network. STEUBENVILLE Quinn Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, 515 North St., Steubenville, is observing Black History Month every Sunday in February.
“Our theme for Black History Month will be ‘Gearing Up to Move Forward, ” explained Terry L. Jennings, committee member.
“On the first and second Sunday, (Feb. 7 and Feb. 14) we will celebrate our spiritual heritage by remembering Richard Allen, the founder and first elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church,” she noted.
Speakers will be local businessman Jonathan Littlejohn, Little Snack Shack; Jacqueline Gibson of Quinn; Karla Martin, senior vice president of Diversity, Aspire and Workforce of Eastern Gateway Community College; and Brenda Ware, owner and operator of Miss Brenda’s Restaurant in the Trinity Medical Pavilion.
