EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - For Vidhi Madan, it was never a question of if she was going to do something, but how. Seeing pictures of her cousin working at schools in Uganda and India, seeing girls walk miles just to get to their classrooms, she felt powerless an ocean away. It was in that moment, Madan said, that she realized she couldn’t stand by and watch.
That day, Madan reached out to regional coordinators in Uganda and India through Instagram. She needed to know, she said, how someone like her could help from New Jersey. As a then-sophomore at East Brunswick High School, it seemed impossible at the time but she was up for the challenge.
