EDWARDSVILLE – Madison County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler has been named chair of the East-West Gateway Council of Governments’ board of directors.
Announced at the organization’s January meeting, Prenzler will serve for one year. Prenzler, who recently won a second term as board chair, said although he had been part of the organization he had been more focused on the county.
“It’s an opportunity for me, now that I’ve been through one term (as board chairman),” he said “There’s a lot for me to learn about the metropolitan issues. It’s a good time for me to learn more.”
Alton receives money for Brown Street work

ALTON The city has received $600,000 for the Phase 1 Brown Street Improvements Project.
The work will consist of asphalt resurfacing and ADA sidewalk accessibility improvements on Brown Street between Main Street and Worden Avenue.
Alton was awarded a $450,000 grant by the East-West Gateway Council of Governments in May 2020 for the work. The Madison County Board approved additional funds of $150,000 in January to help with the $826,500 project.
Engineering and design plans are currently being developed with work expected to begin in Fall 2022.
“This project further demonstrates this administration’s commitment to improving quality of life issues for the citizens of Alton,” said Mayor Brant Walker. “By bringing federal funds to our community, the city is able to support our businesses and contractors while promoting jobs for our local union members.”

There will be more sidewalks connecting College Avenue, Rock Spring Drive, and other nearby streets. The Alton Safe Routes to School Phase 2 project will be going out for bid this spring. The cost is expected to run about $421,000, of which a grant will cover $335,000.

Similar work was completed in 2016 with the construction of a combined use path along College Avenue using similar funding opportunities. The grant for the project was awarded by the East-West Gateway Council of Governments.
County appoints two new department heads

EDWARDSVILLE Two new department heads were approved Wednesday by a divided Madison County Board.
Adam Walden was approved as Madison County engineer, replacing Mark Gvillo, who retired in November. Michael Bold was named the county’s facilities director, taking over from Rob Schmidt, who left to work for the Madison County Transit District in July.
Voting against both appointments were Democratic board members Michael “Doc” Holliday and Bruce Malone of Alton, Matt King of East Alton, Chris Hankins of Pontoon Beach, Jack Minner of Edwardsville, Nick Petrillo of Granite City and Gussie Glasper of Madison.
