EAST LANSING, Mich. â East Lansing Public Schools is planning to change its curriculum after a homework assignment on slavery came under criticism from parents.
The assignment asked students to imagine how they would feel as slaves in several different circumstances. Parents said the assignment was insensitive and even traumatizing for Black students. We don t make any defense on this assignment, but it s completely wrong, and, and we re not going to waste any time trying to defend it or talk about our intentions or any of those kinds of things. It was an inappropriate assignment it was a hurtful assignment, said Director of Curriculum Glenn Mitcham.

New East Lansing Public Schools Prepare for in Person Classes
East Lansing Public Schools plan to open their doors soon, with Covid protocols in place, and hope to have students back to in person learning before the end of February. They are going out of their way to enforce protocols and make sure all staff and students are safe.
When students do officially return, they will be asked to wear masks and social distance. Recess will still be allowed for children but it will be by class, not in large groups, that goes for lunch as well. “It may be different but the overall learning goal is the same. Students haven’t even met their teachers in person yet so we’re excited for that,” said Pinecrest Elementary Principal, Amy Webster. Through this month until February students of all grades will receive information
