In Washington politics, is it really Seattle’s state now?

The Washington state Legislature wrapped up an eventful session last week, passing a raft of major legislation on everything from climate change and child care to policing and progressive taxation. Just how major are these accomplishments, and what do they portend for Washington state politics?
CHENEY, Wash. – A former Southern Oregon University president passed away.
Dr. Mary Cullinan took the helm at SOU in 2006 and stepped down in 2014, moving on to serve as Eastern Washington University’s first female president. She resigned from that position last year.
According to KHQ, Cullinan was on a sabbatical and planned to start teaching EWU students this fall.
Eastern Washington University didn’t release many details about Cullinan’s death but the school did say her family wishes for privacy at this time.

Interim President David May announced her death to the campus in a statement Monday. I don’t have any details to share, but it is a shock. It is the wishes of her family that no one reach out to them at this time, and the university will be respecting these wishes for privacy.
Cullinan was the university s 26th president and the first woman to fill that role. She was appointed in 2014 and was previously the president of Southern Oregon University. During her time as president, the university expanded its footprint in Spokane, with the energy neutral Catalyst Building and the EWU Spokane Campus.

Interim President David May informed the campus of her sudden passing Monday.
“I don’t have any details to share, but it is a shock,” May said.
Cullinan, who was the university’s first female president, stepped down from the role in August 2020 following a vote of no confidence by the faculty senate. She retained a position in the English department, but in October announced she would take a nine-month sabbatical.
The cause of her death has not been announced and May asked that the community respect her family’s privacy at this time.

Surprise has narrowed its police chief search to six finalists and expects to name a new police chief by the end of the month, city officials announced Monday.
The northwest Valley suburb s former chief, Terry Young, stepped down in January to become Surprise s assistant city manager. Young had led the city s Police Department since 2015 after joining the Surprise department in 2010.
Assistant Police Chief Geoffrey Leggett was named interim chief. Leggett first joined the city force in 2011 and is one of the finalists for the position. The others include Aaron Jelcick, Daniel O Neil, Benny Pina, Robert Sanders and Doug Shoemaker.
The city received 62 applications for police chief. Three of the six candidates are local to Arizona, two are from Washington and one is from Colorado. Here are the six finalists.
