Shawn Vestal: A fitting name at last, to honor a warrior woman

A Spokane woman warrior. A fighter. A figure of resistance. Whistalks Way will replace Fort George Wright Drive as the name of the road that runs between North Government Way and the T.J. Meenach Bridge – a naming in honor of Whist-alks, a member of the Spokane Tribe and a figure of defiance to Wright’s brutal campaign against Native people in the Northwest in the 1850s. The naming, supported by the region’s tribes, is intended to honor Whist-alks and by extension all Indigenous women, past and present. “The Spokane Tribe not only wants to honor our native women from the battlefields of the 1800s – we also want to honor the Spokane tribal women of our families today,” the tribe said in a memo to the City Council. “We honor the female warriors who daily fight to protect and preserve our culture, our lifeways, our families, our lands, our environment, and our Tribe.”

© Kevin Scott Previously called one of the 20 “most appalling excuses for architecture on college campuses” by MSNBC, the PUB has been described by students as “dark,” “confusing” and “maze-like,” and well in need of an upgrade. The original architecture was based on trends from prevailing student union models of its time, whit cast concrete and brick walls, small windows and discrete, private areas to accommodate small groups of students. © Kevin Scott The redesign turns the 1968 approach on its heels and creates an easy-to-navigate, open-concept layout that is infused with natural light. A contemporary addition of aluminum, glass, and wood connects the structure from the inside and out and knits the salvaged elements of the 1965 building into a seamless whole. Expansive glass walls line a new atrium space to ensure the student organizations are highly visible promoting interdisciplinary chance meetings as well as the cornerstone of future relationships.
