Montana Human Rights Network raises concerns about Turning Point USA

The Montana Human Rights Network released a report about Turning Point USA in March 2020, saying the group was bringing a “Minor League version of White nationalism” to the Treasure State. The 21-page report notes that Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk is criticized by human rights supporters and media for “inflammatory, biased and exaggerated statements.” “Kirk and TPUSA’s provocative style have attracted curious students,” the report states. “However, once recruited, students are exposed to questionable ideas and tactics. Kirk has built his public persona by distorting data and spreading misinformation,” the Montana Human Rights Network (MHRN) stated. The report notes that White nationalism is a social movement that espouses the United States was founded by and for people of White European heritage.

East Helena Turning Point event promotes conservative causes

Turning Point USA held an event Saturday night at Kleffner Ranch in East Helena.  Gary Marshall, BMGphotos.com Nearly 400 people gathered Saturday near East Helena with a nonprofit conservative group that says it is dedicated to organizing students to promote freedom, free markets and limited government. Speakers at the Turning Point USA Montana Freedom Action event at the Kleffner Ranch included U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont.; state Rep. Derek Skees, R-Kalispell; and, from Turning Point, Alex Clark, Isabel Brown and Vince Dao. While the organization touts that it has representation on high school and college campuses, Saturday’s crowd reflected all ages.

Montan Committee Advances Bill Allowing Utilities To Recover Power Costs From Customers

A Montana legislative committee Friday advanced a bill that borrows language from part of a previously tabled policy and now could allow electric utilities to pass certain replacement power costs onto customers without regulators setting the terms. The amendment, made to a bill to generally revise environmental laws, would permit NorthWestern Energy to charge its customers for power it buys to compensate for outages or reduced generation at the Colstrip coal-fired power plant but only if those costs are associated with environmental testing or compliance with environmental law or permit requirements. Republican Sen. Duane Ankney of Colstrip brought the amendment.
