The historic Casino Theatre in Vandergrift opened in 1900. Ongoing restorations and repairs are a reality for volunteers. The theater remains closed due to the pandemic.

A lifelong love of trivia is paying off for Eddie Fuhrer of Allegheny Township.
The Kiski Area High School senior began watching “Jeopardy!” when he was 5.
“I’ve always been a trivia person,” he said.
Fuhrer joined the Quiz Bowl Team three years ago and is team captain.
Now, on Sunday, he’ll represent Kiski Area High School in the Individual Player National Tournament, sponsored by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments. The National Academic Quiz Tournaments were founded in 1996.
Fuhrer is the first student from the district to qualify at the national level.
He will compete against 111 high school students from 23 states and the District of Columbia.
Aspinwall resident Tim Geary is on one heck of a trek for charity.
Geary, formerly of Vandergrift, began a solo hike March 17 on the Appalachian Trail.
He’s hoping to raise more than $5,000 for research of melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, in honor of his late wife, Gillen, who died in April 2020.
“I promised my wife I would dedicate this hike to her,” said Geary, 77, during a phone interview Monday from the trail in North Carolina. “We talked about this before she died. She wanted me to have a plan.”
The couple shared 53 years of marriage, and Geary served as caregiver during her seven-year battle with melanoma.

There was fraction action happening Tuesday at Kiski Area Upper Elementary School.
Fifth-grader Kolton McKain met with Kiski Area High School 10th-grader Kayla Mull after school for one-on-one math tutoring part of a new After School Mentorship tutoring program.
“I couldn’t imagine trying to learn fifth-grade math online it’s a critical time for learning,” Kayla said.
Kayla is one of about 13 Key Club students from Kiski Area High School offering weekly peer tutoring for about an hour to fifth- and sixth-grade students seeking additional help in core subjects such as math, social studies, English and language arts.
The collaboration was driven by covid-19 conditions, said Upper Elementary Principal Brian Swartzlander.
