Gisborne District Court next in line for Te Ao Mārama model
The Chief District Court Judge, Judge Heemi Taumaunu, along with the Principal Family Court Judge, Judge Jacquelyn Moran and the Principal Youth Court Judge, Judge John Walker have announced the Gisborne District Court will implement the Te Ao Mārama model, designed in partnership with iwi and community engagement.

New Zealand is rolling out a community-focused justice model in its District Courts, one of four major courts in the mainstream hierarchy, according to a statement from the Chief District Court Judge Heemi Taumaunu published Sunday.
The model is known as the Te Ao Mārama model, meaning “the enlightened world.” The model “signals a deliberate intention on the part of the District Court to move ‘towards a more enlightened world’ for the benefit of all people of all ethnicities and cultures who are affected by the business of our court.” A key change is that it seeks to better honor the principle of partnership enshrined in Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) by infusing tikanga Māori and te reo Māori into the mainstream court system, a product of colonization imported from Britain.
Four gang members have been arrested in Wairoa after a police operation targeting organised crime. The men, aged 20, 36, 45, and 54, were arrested on Wednesday for outstanding warrants or bail breaches, senior sergeant Maui Aben said. One man appeared in Gisborne District Court yesterday, and the other three are due to appear this week. Aben said police would continue to target gangs and “anyone else who involves themselves in organised crime”.
