Date Time Nominations now open for Geelong Awards for People with Disability Nominations of individuals with disability who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in advocacy, leadership, empowering others in the workplace or in a voluntary capacity or who have achieved a significant milestone or success, are invited for the Geelong Awards for People with Disability. The opening of nominations on Thursday 17 June coincided with the annual VALiD Having a Say conference which was held online from 16 to 17 June 2021. Now in its sixth year, and its second year delivered by the City, the awards program is an important part of the City’s work in building an accessible and inclusive community for all while celebrating the achievements of those with disability. Date Time Easing of regional restrictions welcomed The City is preparing to reopen a range of its public facilities across Greater Geelong, in line with the proposed easing of some restrictions in regional Victoria. On the back of no community transmission in regional Victoria, the state government today announced that regional restrictions were set to ease from Friday 4 June. However, the government has flagged that the proposed changes are subject to further testing and contact tracing and will not be confirmed until Thursday. Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher welcomed the lifting of the regional lockdown, which would allow freedom of travel and a raft of businesses to resume trade.

RACV and Orygen partner to give young people experiencing mental ill-health new opportunities

RACV A new evidence-based service aimed at supporting young people with mental ill-health back to work and study has been established at Barwon Health’s Jigsaw Youth Mental Health Drugs and Alcohol Services in Corio. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) service is just one program to be delivered as part of a three-year partnership between Orygen and RACV aimed at improving education and employment success for young people suffering mental ill-health. The delivery partner for IPS is Barwon Health. IPS is an evidence-based model of employment and education support for young people which integrates vocational support services with clinical mental health services.

Date Time Opportunities identified to grow our tourism economy Council’s reinforced its drive to strengthen the region’s tourism economy by renewing the City’s partnership with Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine (TGGB) and neighbouring councils for another four years. Figures presented to the Council during tonight’s meeting reveal, that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry is still expected to inject $763 million into the region in the 2021 financial year. It directly employs 7,551 people and supports more than 2,600 businesses. Due to the pandemic and changing travel restrictions, our region’s tourism economy is now largely driven by day trips and short breaks with visitors from Victoria visiting friends and relatives, leading to busier weekends and slower weekdays.

Date Time Inclusive and welcoming playspace for all becoming a reality A new inclusive playspace in Rippleside for people of all abilities is one step closer with the Greater Geelong Council endorsing the concept plans last night, following community consultation. Council has partnered with Variety – The Children’s Charity to deliver the world-class Rippleside Inclusive Playspace, that will attract both local families and those from across Victoria. The flagship playground will provide fun and challenging experiences for all children through a fenced play area incorporating multi-sensory and natural play elements and a tree top walk with views across the bay.
