Port of Montreal strike could not have come at a worse time for farmers: Fertilizer Canada CEO VIDEO SIGN OUT
Longshoremen at Canadaâs Port of Montreal are back at work after lawmakers passed legislation to end a strike that added to shipping delays.
The Montreal Port Authority said full operations have resumed as of Saturday. Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeauâs order, a new collective agreement will be established between the workers and the employers, and work stoppages will no longer be possible, it added.
âThis new turning point lets the Port of Montreal regain stability and the capability to fulfill its strategic role as a public service without long-term interruptions,â said Chief Executive Officer Martin Imbleau. âOur priority now is to plan for the resumption of port operations and to ensure efficient and seamless service.â

For the past five years, I have documented the experiences of Syrian refugees who were targets of abuse. President Donald Trump has called them Trojan horses for terrorism and used them as scapegoats for his Muslim ban. Trump also slashed refugee admission quotas from the 110,000-person cap of the Obama era to just 18,000 people.
Refugees from Syria and elsewhere are impacted by other xenophobic policies as well, like the Trump administration’s December 1 move to add questions to the already difficult citizenship exam.
President-elect Joe Biden seems willing to cancel at least some of these policies. He has already pledged to raise the annual refugee admission target to 125,000 refugees. But the Biden administration can and must go much further.
