A 39-year-old Keystone Heights man is behind bars after a high-speed chase through Jacksonville and Yulee ended after multiple attempts to stop a speeding car succeeded in Camden County, Ga., the Jacksonville Sheriff s Office said.
Keith Morris Smith Jr. of Crater Lake Circle South remains behind bars on $20,000 bail on charges of fleeing an officer and hit and run, as well as a Clay County warrant for lewd and lascivious molestation of a teenage girl, police said.
Smith was arrested on Jan. 3, 2020, accused of lewd and lascivious molestation of a 15-year-old girl, according to Clay County court records. The girl was found in his Keystone Heights home four days before, clad only in a T-shirt in a closet, his Clay County arrest report said. His bail was revoked on Jan. 20 by a Clay County judge.

Clay County has received $6.6 million from the Department of the Treasury through the CARES Act to provide rental assistance to eligible households negatively impacted due to COVID-19 and the resulting economic impact.
Clay County residents can apply to cover the financial obligation of three months of past due rent, internet services, and utility and home energy costs, including electricity, gas, water, and fuel oil, incurred from March 2020 to now. This county-wide program covers unincorporated areas and all municipalities.
